Kudjape Cemetery
Kudjape Cemetery (from 1780 onwards) is the town graveyard, located on the outskirts of Kuressaare, on the island of Saaremaa (the largest island in Estonia also known for its unique culture and natural beauty).
The cemetery can be admired for many reasons:
- Sculpture and hammered art
- Classicistic style chapels
- Monument honouring repressed islanders
- Military cemetery where both German and Russian soldiers have been buried.
- Ashlers and forgings
- Graves of notable people, including writers.
Limbo
One may sense a feeling of “limbo” walking around the cemetery. Empty seating places next to graves. Different generations of families buried together. A sense of time passing but chapels remaining static (except for decay and lack of repairs). It makes one ask if oneself is in limbo too!
